I hadn’t seen The Mighty Saxon perform live since the 80’s. So it was with great anticipation that I drove out to MoJoe’s in Joliet to see Biff and the crew on Saturday September the 20th. I really liked MoJoe’s and Saxon (?)… They blew the place up! Saxon released their first record in ’79 and this show demonstrated why this band was so important to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Singer Biff Byford didn’t miss a note and can still easily own a crowd. Other than a P.A. problem that lasted all of about five minutes, the show was without fault.
Saxon isn’t a Ferrari. They’re a four on the floor Boss 429 metal band! They’ve always excelled at writing fist-pumping anthems, just as they displayed Saturday night. Whether it was Dallas 1 p.m., Strong Arm of the Law, Denim and Leather or new material from their latest release ‘Sacrifice’, it was non-stop head-banging metal! It was a loud and raucous crowd that night (as much as our older generation can be) that obviously knew the old material and dug the new music as well.
The brotherhood of metal is alive and well! Saxon was grateful to the crowd and promised to come back to this venue. GO SEE THEM! Support this massively influential band and have a great time doing it! Oh, and the new record sounds just as badass as their classic material.
